VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – Scott Rigell, the Republican nominee in Virginia’s Second Congressional District, demonstrated a clear command of the issues and easily won the first debate last week, sponsored by the Citizens’ Advisory Committee of Virginia Beach’s 3rd Police Precinct. On a wide range of questions, from spending and the economy to immigration and healthcare, Scott spoke decisively and laid out his ideas regarding renewing America. An inductee into the 2010 Hampton Roads Business Hall of Fame, Scott highlighted his experience as a businessman and job creator. Congressional reform remains one of Scott’s major platforms, and he took the opportunity to outline his plans to change Congress.

The standing room only crowd of over 600 people witnessed Scott hold Democratic incumbent Congressman Glenn Nye accountable for, among other things, voting for the $800 billion stimulus package that has failed to create jobs. Scott highlighted Congressman Nye’s habitual uncertainty in deciding how to vote, noting that “clarity comes to Congressman Nye when clarity comes to Speaker Pelosi on the vote count.”

To watch Scott’s closing remarks from the debate, click on the video below:

Upcoming Debates

Scott is looking forward to his next debate on September 2nd at Second Calvary Baptist Church in Norfolk, which will be moderated by local CBS affiliate WTKR-3 reporter Barbara Ciara. Scott will also participate in a one on one debate being hosted by the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater on September 16th or October 28th, which will be moderated by Joel Rubin of Rubin Communications.

Upcoming Candidate Forums

In addition, Scott is participating in two candidate forums. The first forum will be hosted by the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, of which Scott is a longtime member, on September 27th, and the second forum will be hosted by the Roundtable of Business Leaders on October 20th.

“We the People” Town Halls

As part of his commitment to listen to and connect with voters throughout the Second District, Scott is hosting four “We the People” Town Hall meetings, one in every geographical region of the district. On Monday evening, Scott completed his first “We the People” Town Hall in Hampton with a packed crowd asking him a variety of questions on the economy, Afghanistan and creating jobs.

These debates, town halls, and forums clearly demonstrate Scott’s commitment and desire to actively engage the citizens of our district on the important issues facing our region and country. The town halls are unscripted, unrehearsed, and allow anyone to ask Scott a question on any topic. They show Scott’s understanding of the issues and highlight his personal character and commitment to “leadership by example” that the Second District and America so desperately need.

Please join Scott at the next “We the People” Town Hall on the Eastern Shore on Monday, September 20 from 6:30pm to 8:00pm at the Captain’s Cove Golf & Yacht Club, 4243 Captain’s Corridor, Greenbackville, Virginia 23356. Norfolk and Virginia Beach “We the People” Town Halls will be scheduled in October.

Announcement by the Administration affects 4,000 plus local jobs

Democratic Congressman is once again unable to provide leadership in protecting jobs in the Second District

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – Scott Rigell, the Republican nominee in Virginia’s Second Congressional District, issued sharp criticism of Democratic freshman incumbent Congressman Glenn Nye’s inability to lead and protect the critical United States Joint Forces Command (USJFCOM) in Norfolk. The recent announcement by Defense Secretary Robert Gates means over 4,000 jobs could be lost during these already tough economic times. The planned closure of Norfolk’s Joint Forces Command, coupled with the loss of a Hampton Roads-based aircraft carrier, means that the Hampton Roads region is likely to lose over 15,000 jobs under Glenn Nye’s watch. The loss of the aircraft carrier alone means losing $650 million in annual economic activity in the region. The USJFCOM closure will be another devastating loss for the small businesses and hard working families in our communities.

Rigell released the following statement today:

“The planned closure of Norfolk’s Joint Forces Command is yet one more painful consequence of having Glenn Nye in Congress. Once again, our region is on the verge of losing a major military asset, and our freshman incumbent has done little to stop such a move. Hampton Roads and Eastern Shore families cannot afford another two years of Glenn Nye and his lack of leadership on jobs and growing our economy.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time Congressman Nye has failed to protect our region. Despite the potential loss of a carrier, Nye waited a full year after he took office, and just days before the Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR) was published, to form a commission to coordinate our region’s response to Florida’s relentless efforts to move our military assets and commands. It is telling that Norfolk Mayor Paul Fraim observed that forming a unified local response was ‘long overdue.’

Losing the USJFCOM has the same potential to devastate our economy as does the loss of a carrier. The closure of companies that depend on the modeling and simulation component of the USJFCOM, including Lockheed Martin, will ripple through our real estate market, restaurants, and other small businesses.

For over eighteen months, we have seen an out-of-touch Congress spend our country into a $1.4 trillion deficit; now the bill is coming due. Speaker Pelosi’s liberal agenda and hyperactive spending is now forcing us to cut our national defense. At a time when virtually every federal department is growing, it is astonishing that the Department of Defense is the only one facing real cuts. This is another example of the misplaced priorities of our freshman incumbent who voted in the Democratic Congressional leadership that is taking our country down the wrong track.

In contrast, I believe in a policy of peace through strength, which can only be sustained through a robust economy. America’s national security is directly tied to our economic strength and the vitality of our private employers. That is why my campaign is dedicated to creating jobs and renewing America.”

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – Scott Rigell, conservative Republican candidate for Congress, today released key findings from the first poll to focus on November’s general election in Virginia’s Second Congressional District. To view the full memorandum and the head to head results released by Public Opinion Strategies, please click here.

After reviewing the results of the poll, Campaign Manager Jason Miyares released the following statement:

“These results are consistent with what Scott Rigell is hearing throughout the district; voters are anxious to send a conservative leader from the real world to Washington. Unlike politicians in Washington, Scott Rigell has met a payroll, balanced a budget, and created jobs. It is rare that a challenger would have a lead over an incumbent so early in the race, but it demonstrates that Rigell’s message of bringing business sense and conservative leadership to Washington is resonating with families in Hampton Roads and on the Eastern Shore.”

Public Opinion Strategies is one of the most well respected polling companies in the nation and has conducted polling for numerous high profile campaigns, including Bob McDonnell for Governor, Ken Cuccinelli for Attorney General, Congressman Randy Forbes, and Scott Brown for United States Senate.
Scott Rigell prevails in a strong field of five other Republican candidates and is ready to defeat freshman Congressman Glenn Nye in November

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – Scott Rigell, conservative Republican candidate for Congress in Virginia’s Second Congressional District, won the Republican primary held on June 8, 2010. Rigell emerged from the crowded field of five other candidates by a double digit margin, winning 124 of the 161 precincts in the Second Congressional District.

Rigell, the owner of Freedom Automotive, is an experienced businessman who was recently inducted into the Hampton Roads Business Hall of Fame. Unlike many politicians in Washington, he has met a payroll, balanced a budget, and created jobs. He will face the freshman Democratic incumbent, Congressman Glenn Nye, on November 2, 2010.

Rigell released the following statement today:

“To the hard-working families of Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore, thank you for the confidence you have shown in me by nominating me as your Republican candidate for Congress in Virginia’s Second Congressional District. Tuesday was an important first step in our campaign to bring business sense and conservative leadership to Washington.

Thank you to Ben Loyola, Bert Mizusawa, Scott Taylor, Jessica Sandlin and Ed Maulbeck for running spirited campaigns and for their love of country. The time commitment and sacrifice a candidate makes when running for public office is high, and I applaud all the candidates for their desire to serve in public office. They are great Americans who share a deep commitment to our core conservative Republican values. I look forward to working with each of them in moving forward our shared goal to replace our freshman Democratic incumbent with a tested and proven leader from the real world, and I respectfully ask their supporters to join us in that effort.

Thank you to all of our volunteers, supporters and staff! Teri and I are so grateful for each of you. I greatly appreciate all of your hard work, prayers, and votes. Working together, we will clebrate another victory on November 2nd!”

In addition to enthusiastic support from national conservative figures like Congressman Eric Cantor, and statewide conservative figures like Governor Bob McDonnell and Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling, Scott Rigell has also received the support of countless local Republicans, including over a half dozen members of the Virginia General Assembly, over ten current and past city council members, local Constitutional officers, and several local mayors. For a full list of endorsements, visit www.ScottRigell.com.

One candidate even calls Scott Rigell to apologize!

Staying true to the will of the good people of Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District, Scott Rigell rejects traditional political strategy and stays focused on America’s future.

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – Just days after receiving the results of a poll that showed Scott Rigell, conservative Republican candidate for Congress in Virginia’s Second Congressional District, with a commanding lead heading into the Republican Primary on Tuesday, several candidates behind in the polls are attacking Scott Rigell, deliberately distorting his consistent twenty-year history of moving forward conservative Republican candidates and defeating the Liberal Agenda.

Campaign Manager Jason Miyares made the following statement:

With “politics as usual,” in the last days of a campaign, candidates who are behind in the polls often set principle aside and resort to distortions in an effort to trick voters. Unfortunately, that is exactly what is taking place in this race. The attacks on Scott Rigell, a lifelong conservative Republican, a man who walked door-to-door with Bob McDonnell in his very first race for the House of Delegates, a man who with his wife, Teri, has donated well over $400,000 to defeat the Liberal Agenda, are designed to trick voters into believing Scott Rigell is a liberal.

Apparently burdened with guilt, one candidate even called Scott Rigell the evening of June 1st to apologize for “going negative.” He explained to Scott that his campaign consultants “talked him into going negative” and distorting the truth. Perhaps the people he should apologize to are the voters of the Second Congressional District who deserve a leader who remains principled and honest under pressure – a leader who refuses to promote half-truths and distortions to promote his campaign.

THE FACTS

All Second Congressional District candidates know that Scott Rigell and his wife, Teri, each donated $2,300 (the maximum allowed by law) to Republican Mitt Romney in the Republican primary in 2008, and that Scott Rigell contributed $2000 to, and voted for, Republican John McCain in the 2008 general election.

To trick voters, candidates deliberately omit that over 99.7% of Scott and Teri Rigell’s contributions went directly to conservative Republican candidates and the Republican party. They deliberately omit that the check written in the Democratic primary was intended to stop Bill and Hillary Clinton from returning to the White House.

Highly respected conservatives, including Governor Bob McDonnell, have enthusiastically endorsed Scott Rigell because they know the REAL Scott Rigell – not the shameful caricature of Scott that voters received in the mail recently.

I fully agree with what Scott shared on Saturday: ‘If a man will compromise his principles to win an office, he will compromise his principles to stay in office.’

Since Scott declared his candidacy last summer, he has run a different kind of campaign. He has been truly listening to voice of the people of the Second District. And across the district, voters have said;

‘NO MORE NEGATIVE CAMPAIGNING’

Scott Rigell is listening to the voters in this campaign, and Scott will listen to the people while serving in Congress. Team Rigell has widespread support and momentum because voters trust Scott’s principled, conservative, proven leadership. They know Scott Rigell will stay true in moving forward his plan to set America on the right track by:

- Cutting Spending

- Creating Jobs

- Changing Congress

I ask that you join Scott in rejecting negative attacks, distortions, and “politics as usual.” The people of the Second District deserve better from their representative. Scott Rigell is the conservative leader we need right now in Congress.”

Business Sense. Conservative Leadership.

Elect Scott Rigell this Tuesday, June 8th!

Washington, D.C. – Eagle Forum PAC, a conservative public policy organization founded by Phyllis Schlafly is proud to endorse Scott Rigell in the race to represent Virginia’s Second Congressional District.

“Scott Rigell is the kind of candidate we get when people stand up and demand better Congressional representatives,” said Schlafly. “We need him and more like him in Congress.”

“One of the greatest results we’re seeing from Tea Parties and the massive grassroots outpouring against the current Congress’ agenda, is that excellent candidates like Scott Rigell, who are committed to their faith, family and communities, are stepping up, making the sacrifices and doing the work necessary to run for Congress,” said Eagle Forum Executive Director Colleen Holmes.

“We need people like Scott, who aren’t coming to Washington to realize personal ambition, but are coming to represent and fight for their families’ and communities’ values,” Holmes continued.

“We look forward to working with leaders like Scott in the next Congress.” Schlafly added, “As a business owner and community leader, Scott knows the damage Washington’s spending and control can do to Tidewater families, and he’s determined to stop the slide toward socialism and protect all that makes America great.”

Eagle Forum PAC supports candidates who are committed to a conservative philosophy of limited government, national sovereignty and traditional values.

Nye unwisely preempts key report and again chooses to follow Speaker Pelosi

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA: Scott Rigell, 2nd generation Marine (USMCR), proud father of a 3rd generation Marine, and conservative Republican candidate in Virginia’s Second Congressional District, drew a clear contrast between his position on “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and the position held by the incumbent, freshman Congressman Glenn Nye. Nye made his position clear yesterday by joining with Speaker Pelosi in voting to take the steps to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

Congressman Nye’s vote to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” preempts the Comprehensive Review currently being conducted by the Department of Defense in order to receive the input of military service members in all branches of our armed forces. The report is due in December of this year.

Scott Rigell issued the following statement in response to yesterday’s vote on the Murphy Amendment, which takes the steps to repeal the military’s 17 year old “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy:

“As an American, as a former Marine (USMCR), and as a candidate for Congress, I am very disappointed but not surprised that our freshman Congressman Glenn Nye joined Speaker Pelosi in voting to repeal ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.’ What is particularly troubling, and I think an indication of a serious deficit in Nye’s wisdom and leadership, is that he voted ‘AYE’ prior to receiving the results of the Comprehensive Review of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ that is underway by the Department of Defense.

Congressman Nye’s position puts him in full agreement with Speaker Pelosi, but at odds with the four million members of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, and over 1,100 retired admirals and generals. Congressman Nye’s latest vote moves forward an aggressive, wide-reaching legislative agenda that is being thrust upon the American people by Speaker Pelosi. Ranging from health care to the economy, and now with military policies, their policies are not driven by good data but by a strong commitment to turn America hard left.

Congressman Nye and his liberal colleagues are in sync with each other and San Francisco values, but not with everyday Americans, certainly not from the Second Congressional District. Unlike Congressman Glenn Nye, I would have voted ‘NO’ to repealing ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.’”

With the June 8th Republican Primary two weeks away, Rigell has built a 37-point lead over all opponents with likely Republican Primary voters

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – Local businessman and entrepreneur Scott Rigell, conservative Republican candidate for Congress in Virginia’s Second Congressional District, today released a memo of key findings from one of the most well respected polling companies in the nation. Patrick Lanne of Public Opinion Strategies conducted a survey of 300 likely Republican primary voters in Virginia’s Second Congressional District on May 17 and 18. The survey asked who the respondent was planning to vote for in the June 8th Republican primary for the Second Congressional District and was not based on any material, positive or otherwise, concerning any particular candidate.

To view the memorandum and the head to head results released by Public Opinion Strategies, please click here. For a list of campaigns that have used Public Opinion Strategies to provide polling data, please visit http://pos.org/clients/campaigns.

The results of the poll show that Scott Rigell commands a wide lead in both name identification and favorable ratings over his primary opponents. Rigell holds a significant advantage in name identification, with 86% name recognition (a lead of almost 30-points over the next closest candidate). More importantly, 64% of likely Republican primary voters (nearly two-thirds) have a favorable impression of Scott Rigell, which is 42-points higher than his closest rival. The ballot test shows Scott Rigell with an impressive 37-point lead over his closest rival for the Republican nomination.

One of the key findings of the survey is that “Rigell is well-known and well-liked and his campaign message of creating jobs and fixing Washington DC is striking a chord with Republican primary voters.” In addition, “Rigell’s ballot strength cuts across all major subgroups in the poll including very conservative voters (53%), strong Republicans (52%), pro-life voters (49%), strong tea party supporters (52%), and those that are very likely to vote (46%).”

After reviewing the key findings, Rigell released the following statement today:

“I am pleased that my conservative message of cutting spending, creating jobs, and changing Congress is resonating so well with the people of Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore. While these results are incredibly encouraging, we will continue the focused, intense pace that has characterized our campaign since I declared my candidacy for Congress on July 8, 2009.

We will be traveling throughout the Second District, meeting with voters who are concerned about our stagnant economy, out of control spending in Washington and an out-of-touch Congress. I remain fully focused on our ultimate objective, which is bringing business sense and conservative leadership to our United States Congress.”

In addition to enthusiastic support from national conservative figures like Governor Bob McDonnell and Congressman Eric Cantor, Scott has also received the support of countless local Republicans, including over a half dozen members of the Virginia General Assembly, over ten current and past city council members, local Constitutional officers and several local mayors.
Rigell receives prestigious award based on record of achievement

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – Local businessman and entrepreneur Scott Rigell, conservative Republican candidate for Congress in Virginia’s Second Congressional District, was inducted as a Laureate into the 2010 Hampton Roads Business Hall of Fame yesterday evening in Norfolk. The induction ceremony included a video highlighting Scott’s servant leadership style that has made him so successful as an entrepreneur and in business. To watch this short, very moving video, please click here.

Junior Achievement of Greater Hampton Roads grants this award as a “lifetime achievement award for individuals who have made a major, positive impact on the Greater Hampton Roads Region through the private sector economy.” The organization found that Scott Rigell’s record of achievement demonstrates “business excellence; courageous thinking and actions; visionary, innovative leadership; and community involvement.”

In response to this incredible honor, Scott Rigell released the following statement on Friday:

“While I am deeply honored to be inducted into the Hampton Roads Business Hall of Fame, this recognition is really a reflection of the ‘Freedom Family’ I have been privileged to work with for almost two decades. It is inspiring to work with such dedicated colleagues who have made the Freedom dealerships such a special work environment. This award would not be possible without my wonderful family, particularly my wife of 28 years, Teri, who has always been so supportive and has worked alongside me all these years.

When Teri and I started our first business years ago cleaning homes and offices, I never would have predicted that I would one day be inducted into the Hampton Roads Business Hall of Fame. This award shows that anything is possible with a strong work ethic and a drive for excellence in all areas, particularly customer service. I am committed to bringing the same servant leadership that we exemplify in the dealerships to representing the people of Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore in Congress.”

“I believe that Scott Rigell is the right man at the right time to fight for our shared values in Washington.”

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – Just months removed from winning the gubernatorial race with the largest margin of victory in modern Virginia political history, Governor Bob McDonnell endorsed local businessman and entrepreneur Scott Rigell, conservative Republican candidate for Virginia’s Second Congressional District. Pointing to a close friendship that has existed for close to two decades, the Governor of Virginia endorsed Scott Rigell’s campaign to bring business sense and conservative leadership to Washington.

To watch Governor McDonnell’s remarks, click here.

Governor Bob McDonnell made the following statement:

“I am proud to support my good friend and conservative leader Scott Rigell for the United States Congress in Virginia’s Second Congressional District. Scott Rigell is a local business leader and a long-standing leader in our community. I believe Scott Rigell is the right man at the right time to fight for our shared conservative values in Washington. As Governor, I need a working partner in Washington, committed to fighting for lower taxes and less regulation, and helping to create the environment where we can create more jobs.

Scott Rigell is that partner.

Please join me in supporting Scott Rigell for United States Congress.”

Scott Rigell was humbled and honored by the surprise endorsement from Governor Bob McDonnell.

“In 1991, I went door to door for Bob McDonnell in his first race for the House of Delegates, and I’ve worked hard to elect him in his races since then. As a well-respected conservative leader, he has been a true advocate for our conservative principles for years. I’m deeply honored to have his endorsement and excited about being his working partner in Washington to fight to create jobs and get our economy moving again.”

In November, Governor Bob McDonnell won his gubernatorial campaign by an incredible 18 points, winning every major locality in the Commonwealth of Virginia and swept the Hampton Roads region with over 60% of the vote.

In addition to vast support from national conservative figures like Governor Bob McDonnell and Congressman Eric Cantor, Scott Rigell has also received the support of countless local Republicans, including over a half dozen members of the Virginia General Assembly, over ten current and past city council members, local Constitutional officers and several local mayors. For a full list of endorsements, visit www.ScottRigell.com.
