Incumbent Polling At Only 41% In Latest Poll

VIRGINIA BEACH – Public Opinion Strategies released another poll that confirms Scott Rigell, Republican nominee in Virginia’s Second Congressional District, maintains a clear lead in his campaign to unseat incumbent Congressman Glenn Nye. 

The latest poll shows Scott Rigell with a five point advantage over the incumbent Nye (46% – 41%). More importantly, with growing momentum, Scott Rigell has a nine point advantage with self-described Independent voters.

RIGELL EMPHASIZES JOBS AND THE ECONOMY FOLLOWING YET ANOTHER TROUBLING UNEMPLOYMENT REPORT

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – Scott Rigell, Republican nominee in Virginia’s Second Congressional District, gave a command performance at the second debate sponsored by Second Calvary Baptist Church in Norfolk. The questions asked during the debate came from everyday citizens and conveyed a range of topics, including health care legislation passed by Democrats in Congress, plans for saving the Joint Forces Command (based in Norfolk), offshore drilling, spending, and immigration.

Throughout the debate, Scott focused on his expertise and proven track record in job creation. Scott was the only candidate who spoke about holding accountable those employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants.

The second debate came on the heels of the troubling news that unemployment rates are rising. In Norfolk, where the debate was held, unemployment rose to 9.9%, meaning that one out of every ten people in Norfolk is unemployed. Nationally, the unemployment rate rose to 9.7%, a clear indication that the $800 billion stimulus bill that was passed by Democrats, with the support and vote of freshman Democratic incumbent Glenn Nye, has failed to create the jobs that Americans desperately need.

Congressman Nye was on the defensive regarding his first vote in office, which was to make Nancy Pelosi the Speaker of the House. Congressman Nye claimed that Scott’s latest television ad regarding that vote and Congressman Nye’s vote for the $800 billion stimulus bill was a negative attack ad, but the ad merely stated the facts. Scott released the following statement today:

“Congressman Nye likes to tout that he voted against the health care legislation because it was ‘too expensive.’ Yet during the debate, he was forced by the moderator to admit that he would vote against a discharge petition which would force a vote to repeal the Democrats’ recently enacted health care reform legislation and restore over $500 billion in Medicare cuts.

Furthermore, on June 24, 2010, Congressman Nye voted against a bill which would have defunded the $5-10 billion required by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to implement and enforce the health care legislation, including thousands of new IRS agents and employees. The health care mandate requires all Americans to purchase health insurance.

Congressman Nye’s inability or unwillingness to stand by his decisions and maintain a firm, consistent position shows that he lacks the core convictions necessary to be a leader in Congress.

In addition, Congressman Nye stated that he got right to work on the issue of saving our carriers, which he now claims is a problem he inherited. However, the records show that Congressman Nye waited over a year after he took office to form a commission to coordinate our region’s response to the continuous efforts by Florida and other states to move our military assets and commands.

Now more than ever, we need proven leadership in Washington. If I have the high privilege to represent the people of the Second District, I will work tirelessly to create jobs and a strong economy that will generate the tax revenues needed to improve our schools, strengthen social security, and meet the deep obligation we have to the men and women who proudly serve in our military.”

Upcoming Debates

Scott is looking forward to his next debate on September 2nd at Second Calvary Baptist Church in Norfolk, which will be moderated by local CBS affiliate WTKR-3 reporter Barbara Ciara.  Scott will also participate in a one on one debate being hosted by the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater on September 16^th or October 28th, which will be moderated by Joel Rubin of Rubin Communications.

Announcement by the Administration affects 4,000 plus local jobs

Democratic Congressman is once again unable to provide leadership in protecting jobs in the Second District

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – Scott Rigell, the Republican nominee in Virginia’s Second Congressional District, issued sharp criticism of Democratic freshman incumbent Congressman Glenn Nye’s inability to lead and protect the critical United States Joint Forces Command (USJFCOM) in Norfolk.  The recent announcement by Defense Secretary Robert Gates means over 4,000 jobs could be lost during these already tough economic times.  The planned closure of Norfolk’s Joint Forces Command, coupled with the loss of a Hampton Roads-based aircraft carrier, means that the Hampton Roads region is likely to lose over 15,000 jobs under Glenn Nye’s watch.  The loss of the aircraft carrier alone means losing $650 million in annual economic activity in the region.  The USJFCOM closure will be another devastating loss for the small businesses and hard working families in our communities.

Rigell released the following statement today:

“The planned closure of Norfolk’s Joint Forces Command is yet one more painful consequence of having Glenn Nye in Congress.  Once again, our region is on the verge of losing a major military asset, and our freshman incumbent has done little to stop such a move.  Hampton Roads and Eastern Shore families cannot afford another two years of Glenn Nye and his lack of leadership on jobs and growing our economy.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time Congressman Nye has failed to protect our region. Despite the potential loss of a carrier, Nye waited a full year after he took office, and just days before the Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR) was published, to form a commission to coordinate our region’s response to Florida’s relentless efforts to move our military assets and commands. It is telling that Norfolk Mayor Paul Fraim observed that forming a unified local response was ‘long overdue.’

Losing the USJFCOM has the same potential to devastate our economy as does the loss of a carrier.  The closure of companies that depend on the modeling and simulation component of the USJFCOM, including Lockheed Martin, will ripple through our real estate market, restaurants, and other small businesses.

For over eighteen months, we have seen an out-of-touch Congress spend our country into a $1.4 trillion deficit; now the bill is coming due.  Speaker Pelosi’s liberal agenda and hyperactive spending is now forcing us to cut our national defense. At a time when virtually every federal department is growing, it is astonishing that the Department of Defense is the only one facing real cuts.  This is another example of the misplaced priorities of our freshman incumbent who voted in the Democratic Congressional leadership that is taking our country down the wrong track.

In contrast, I believe in a policy of peace through strength, which can only be sustained through a robust economy.  America’s national security is directly tied to our economic strength and the vitality of our private employers.  That is why my campaign is dedicated to creating jobs and renewing America.”

Scott Rigell prevails in a strong field of five other Republican candidates and is ready to defeat freshman Congressman Glenn Nye in November

One candidate even calls Scott Rigell to apologize!

Staying true to the will of the good people of Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District, Scott Rigell rejects traditional political strategy and stays focused on America’s future.

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – Just days after receiving the results of a poll that showed Scott Rigell, conservative Republican candidate for Congress in Virginia’s Second Congressional District, with a commanding lead heading into the Republican Primary on Tuesday, several candidates behind in the polls are attacking Scott Rigell, deliberately distorting his consistent twenty-year history of moving forward conservative Republican candidates and defeating the Liberal Agenda.

Campaign Manager Jason Miyares made the following statement:

With “politics as usual,” in the last days of a campaign, candidates who are behind in the polls often set principle aside and resort to distortions in an effort to trick voters. Unfortunately, that is exactly what is taking place in this race. The attacks on Scott Rigell, a lifelong conservative Republican, a man who walked door-to-door with Bob McDonnell in his very first race for the House of Delegates, a man who with his wife, Teri, has donated well over $400,000 to defeat the Liberal Agenda, are designed to trick voters into believing Scott Rigell is a liberal.

Apparently burdened with guilt, one candidate even called Scott Rigell the evening of June 1st to apologize for “going negative.” He explained to Scott that his campaign consultants “talked him into going negative” and distorting the truth. Perhaps the people he should apologize to are the voters of the Second Congressional District who deserve a leader who remains principled and honest under pressure – a leader who refuses to promote half-truths and distortions to promote his campaign.

THE FACTS

All Second Congressional District candidates know that Scott Rigell and his wife, Teri, each donated $2,300 (the maximum allowed by law) to Republican Mitt Romney in the Republican primary in 2008, and that Scott Rigell contributed $2000 to, and voted for, Republican John McCain in the 2008 general election.

To trick voters, candidates deliberately omit that over 99.7% of Scott and Teri Rigell’s contributions went directly to conservative Republican candidates and the Republican party. They deliberately omit that the check written in the Democratic primary was intended to stop Bill and Hillary Clinton from returning to the White House.

Highly respected conservatives, including Governor Bob McDonnell, have enthusiastically endorsed Scott Rigell because they know the REAL Scott Rigell – not the shameful caricature of Scott that voters received in the mail recently.

I fully agree with what Scott shared on Saturday: ‘If a man will compromise his principles to win an office, he will compromise his principles to stay in office.’
