Lifelong Republican, businessman, community leader and former Marine reservist wins support from several GOP elected officials upon announcement
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – GOP congressional candidate Scott Rigell released the following statement Wednesday:
“Today, I filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission establishing a campaign committee to run for Congress.
“I grew up in a middle-class family, served our country in the Marine Corps Reserves and grew a successful business. In Congress, I will leverage my background to fight every step of the way for working families, for our military men and women, and for the small businesses that form the backbone of our economy.
“I am running to leave our children with a brighter future. My father, who fought in the sands of Iwo Jima as a young Marine, taught me the meaning of duty – the obligation that one generation has to the next. Generational duty led me to enlist in the United States Marine Corps Reserve in 1978, just as my son Justus did twenty years later. That same spirit now compels me to run for public office.
“I will move quickly to organize a strong grassroots campaign behind which all Republicans can unite, and I am proud to have earned the support of several Hampton Roads Republican leaders. After working hard to elect my friend Bob McDonnell – and all Republicans up and down the 2009 ticket – I will make a more formal announcement in November.”
Scott has secured endorsements from the following Hampton Roads Republicans:
- Former Congresswoman Thelma Drake
- State Senator Frank Wagner
- State Delegate Sal Iaquinto
- State Delegate Bob Purkey
- Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney Harvey Bryant
- Virginia Beach City Council Member (At-Large) Ron Villanueva
- Virginia Beach City Council Member (At-Large) Bill DeSteph
- Dr. Robert Martinez, former Secretary of Transportation under Governor Allen
