03/26/2010 07:20PM : Nationally Recognized Conservative Leader, Virginia’s RNC Committeeman, Endorses Rigell for Congress

VIRGINIA BEACH – Scott Rigell, Republican candidate for United States Congress, received the endorsement of Morton Blackwell, who has served as Virginia’s national committeeman to the Republican National Committee since 1988 and president of the Leadership Institute in Arlington, VA since 1979. He issued the following statement today:

“I can think of few leaders more committed to the conservative cause in the Republican Party than Scott Rigell. Over the past fifteen years Scott and his wife Teri and their businesses have given more than $400,000 in contributions directly to Republican candidates, including such leading conservatives as Bob McDonnell, George Allen, Michael Farris, Ollie North, Jim Gilmore, Jerry Kilgore, Mark Earley and Randy Forbes.”

“Going all the way back to 1991, Scott Rigell served as Bob McDonnell’s first finance chairman in his initial run for the Virginia House of Delegates and walked door-to-door for our future governor. Then, two years later, Scott Rigell stood by George Allen as a delegate to the state Republican convention and supported him in his historic win to the governor’s mansion. For all of these reasons, I am proud to endorse a dedicated conservative candidate like Scott Rigell for Congress.”

Professionally, Morton Blackwell is the president of the Leadership Institute, a non-partisan educational foundation he founded in 1979. His institute prepares conservatives for success in politics, government and the news media. Over the years the Leadership Institute has trained more than 82,000 students. It currently has revenue of $8 million per year and a staff of 53. Having worked actively in politics for more than forty years, he has probably trained more political activists than any other conservative. Starting in the 1960s, he has trained thousands of people who have served on staff for conservative and Republican candidates in every state. Blackwell served as Special Assistant to the President on President Reagan’s White House Staff 1981-1984.

03/25/2010 07:19PM : WRONG PRESCRIPTION TO FIX HEALTH CARE

Health care legislation contains one of the largest tax increases in U.S. history, is a gross intrusion on personal liberty and threatens our already fragile economy. Rigell again notes Congressman Nye’s failure to lead; supports Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli’s lawsuit challenging federal mandate’s constitutionality

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA: Scott Rigell, Republican candidate in Virginia’s Second Congressional District, sharply criticized H.R. 3590, misleadingly titled as a health care “reform” bill that will raise taxes, increase premiums, increase the size of government, and harm our economy. Rigell released the following statement today:

The American people asked for affordable, common-sense health care reform. Many middle-class families are hurting and are understandably worried about access to health care insurance and the cost of that coverage. This Congress could have provided real solutions to our health care problems. Instead, the Democratic-led Congress unilaterally decided that a government takeover of one-sixth of the United States economy was best for us.

At a time when we are experiencing close to 10% unemployment, Congress has passed legislation that will harm the already struggling small businesses that drive job creation. This bill takes away the choices of both businesses and individuals to decide what is best for them and instead dictates what we all must do. This legislation is anti-investment, with first-time additional taxes on investment income and dividends, includes billions in increased taxes on health plans, which will likely lead to reductions in benefits and push millions of Americans into government programs, and cuts nearly a half trillion dollars from Medicare using Enron-style accounting schemes. The burden of increased taxes, federal mandates, and greater regulation does not allow business owners to do what we need - create new jobs.

Furthermore, only in the bizarre world of Washington could professional politicians who have given us a 13 trillion dollar deficit tell the American people they are going to extend health coverage to 30 million people, and that it will save us money and lower the deficit.”

Scott Rigell again expressed his disappointment in Congressman Glenn Nye’s failure to lead in this area:

It is unfortunate, but not surprising, that our freshman incumbent once again waited until less than 24 hours before a key vote to announce his position. Congressman Nye’s actions have indicated yet again that he receives his legislative direction not from core convictions or principles but from whether Speaker Pelosi requires his vote. Congressman Nye has had weeks to speak out about this deeply flawed and harmful bill. His failure to do so shows he does not lead and is not ready to lead.

I will lead – in both counteracting the harmful provisions of this bill and in working toward truly affordable reform. A full repeal of the bill would be extraordinarily difficult given the veto power of the current occupant of the White House and the Democratic majority. Given the phased implementation of the bill’s full effect, I will work for a targeted, strategic defunding of those provisions that hurt our personal, business, and national wallets and diminish our personal liberty.

As citizens, we are not powerless to stop this government takeover. On election day, we have the power to start setting America on the right track by sending like-minded conservative representatives to Washington who will stop Speaker Pelosi and champion those values that make America the greatest country in the world.”

Scott Rigell also applauded Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli’s lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the federal mandate forcing all Americans to buy health insurance. Rigell stated:

“The massive federal mandate that all Americans must purchase health insurance or be fined (that is, taxed) by the government is a direct assault to our personal liberty. The breadth and scope of this federal intrusion into our individual health care decisions is unprecedented. I believe a federal mandate forcing citizens to purchase a good or service is unconstitutional. Therefore, I fully support Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli’s legal challenge.”
